International relationship "game"?

The voices from national media usually reflect the country's attitudes. When an accident happened between two countries, the third parties tend to be beyond the occurrence itself, and make some independent views.

on 23 August, a 12-hour hostage stand-off on a hijacked Philippine bus ended in bloodshed Monday, with officials saying at least seven Chinese tourists from Hong Kong were dead along with the disgruntled ex-policeman who seized their vehicle in a bid to get his job back.

This accident captures many national media's attention to coverage it. Some of them concern about the attitudes from the relative countries, some focus on the occurrence itself and the coming investigative results, some of them would like to analysis the reason and something under that.

As the relative country, Chinese media sent a severe reproof to the international society. Asking for the "concrete measures to ensure the safety and security of Chinese citizens in the Philippines", "strongly condemned the atrocity by the hostage-taker", "declared a severe threat in the Philippines", are the strong voices made by Chinese media. After a big disaster caused by and in another country, media power is the vital weapon to express national attitude - anger.

In Philippines, some journalists like Babe Romualdez, who works for the Philippines star, quickly response to the occurrence. It analysis the disaster reason, the international relationship in the coming years, and the fear factor in the tourism. He acts as a spectator, but in fact, his view certainly cling to his nation. As the headline said, "the blame game" ridicule the media voices from China and other condemned media.

From the international media's view, like TODAYonline in US, it tells the public the voices from the both countries with no bias. The objectivity is the obvious feature in this kind of news. After simply demonstrated the occurrence and the on-going process, the US media doesn't stand by any side. It informed "the Chinese government demands the Philippine government launch a thorough investigation into the incident", while give the information of "Philippines President Benigno Aquino III said the incident showed the need for more police training and better equipment" as well.

Actually, many more media in the status of the third party would like to pay more attention to the relationship between the two relative countries. Like BBC, it collected several opinions from the international media, and titled it "Angry media reaction to Manila siege" in his news reporting.

P.S: Please allow me to express my anger on this occurrence. Keep silence for the victims first. I would like to say  - China, please be more powerful! We are strong enough to strike back! Don't look down upon China!

Same shocks but different in pictures

Aiming to display the quo status in disastrous places where like Zhouqu county in China after the recent floods and mudslides, both western media and Chinese media would like to give a hit to readers by visual images. However, even they did the similar headlines and contents, the photos can be different ones because of the diverse angles.

Photo from Xinhua News: Chinese mourn for mudslide victims
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/photo/2010-08/15/c_13445677_5.htm

This is a panorama about the mourning people in rescue site in Zhouqu. A full shot usually gives the audience a whole idea about an affair. In this photo, the collapsed buildings, the rescue machines, the crowds, the black and white crying slogan, with the survival natural scene all together, conducting the readers an idea what is happening in this place. The objective is clear and direct.

However, I prefer another photo taken by the BBC news, even they made the photo from the same site, but the BBC news choose to make a long shot from the opposite side.

Photo from BBC news: In pictures: China unites in grief on day of mourning
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-10978713

In this photo, the killer - the huge mountain - is far away but in the picture, which can tell its readers the disaster is a landslide even they can't read what it said in the black and white crying slogan. Also, the photo highlights the half-mast Chinese national flag, telling the readers what a disastrous thing to China. It gives the meaning with a stress, not only telling the truth but also giving some more details in the photo. It is objective but with more information, clear and direct as well.

After checking any others photos like the ones from Reuters and AFP, some more differences can be found in these western media. Some of them show the feature like "hunt of novelty", and seeking for the "bloody" or terror. Just like the photo from AFP news, as it said "A man walks past the decomposing body of a mudslide victim in Zhouqu", what it selected are not the whole body even in the live person.

The photo chose by Reuters shows the western media care more about the privacy of the person shot in the photo. That's a good tradition in western media.

However, both the photos from AFP and Reuters seem not much relevant to the headlines and the contents they want to report. They didn't tell anything about the morning day but catch a spot to demonstrate this disaster in China only.

Gimmick VS objective

This is another milk powder probe happened in China, which made the baby girls appear pre-mature development of breasts. The angle of these two articles are the same by reporting the sayings of the spokesman of the Chinese health ministry. However, they certainly show some difference in the use of words.

babies develop breasts VS milk powder hormone
In the headlines, the way Chinese news agency point out the case is straightforward. It clearly tells the audience what’s the news and what’s the official claims while the western news use the vague terms “babies develop breasts” instead of “milk powder hormone” like Chinese media.

          scandal VS event
Also, the two articles both refer to the former problem happened in China in 2008 which cause six killed babies and 300,000 sickened due to melamine. But the western media use “scandal” to demonstrate this case while Chinese one just says as “event”, although they admit it came as “another blow to the fragile credibility of China's dairy industry”.

           toxic VS chemical
To indicate the materials added in the milk powder in the previous case, the western media claims it as a “toxic” one while Chinese media says it is a “chemical” stuff.

           at least?
Another interesting finding is that western media unusually use “at least” to report the victim number in Chinese cases, even if Chinese government already informed that the exact number is 6 (in melamine case) and 3 (in hormone case, the date will be updateds).

From the first three examples, the western media always use the terms to attract audience like a gimmick. The odd occurence with the interesting words is a quick lure to capture their attention.

Speaking of the last example, it is an interesting case to discuss in the future. Is it the conscientiousness attitude in the reports of  the western media, or is it the incredibility in their minds by questioning the Chinese “scandals” like this?

However, the objective element should be considered in every journalist’s report. Every word used in the articles must abide this rule in the process of disseminating a news.

Find the bright side from a bad news

After the recent mine casualty happened on 6th August in Shandong province's Zhaoyuan city in China, the news already captured the attention of several mainstream media in the world. When comparing the content of the two relevant stories of AFP and Xinhua News Agency, interesting findings appear.

Firstly, "16" killed workers are both mentioned in the titles as the numbers of death are in focus because of the prominence in news values. However, Xinhua News Agency stresses on the accomplishment of this rescue. What it wants to say is that it had rescued most people even though the "underground blaze initially trapped more than 300", and "the miners appeared in good health". Most importantly, it delivers the information that "mining casualties in China have been declining lately due to strengthened safety measures", although "the country is still plagued by mining accidents". Thus, even there were several accidents took place recently, the numbers of death "were much lower than those from a year earlier according to the official statistics".

But in AFP’s story, it emphasizes that "the latest in a series of accidents in China's notoriously dangerous mining industry" by offering a set of data about how many workers were killed in similar accidents in "earlier this week", "Tuesday", "Late Monday","Last weekend". Therefore, AFP conclude that "the government regularly pledges to clean up safety problems in its mines but deadly accidents are still routine." It uses the terms "'serious' work safety situation" said by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao while providing another ironic data – "Last year 2,631 miners were killed in China", quoting the opinion of an independent labour groups that "the actual figure could be much higher as many accidents are covered up to avoid costly shutdowns."

Obviously, the news angles of these two stories seem significantly different. The AFP’s aim is to give the audiences the image of "China's mining industry is plagued by lax regulation, corruption and inefficiency" while Xinhua News Agency in order to make a picture of how Chinese government and organizations work hard to solve the "serious work safety situation". It is not hard to know the main news value in western media is to disclose the downside of society while Chinese one is to create a inclination to goodness, like what I mentioned in this blog entry headline.

China in my mind and you - :P

Thanks to this blog, I decide to do something always like a dream in my mind.

I heard a lot about the governmental control theory in Chinese media. That's true, but not real. I don't know how to express it properly, but what i try to tell you is that, if you believe in us media, you will find that it is actually a good way to promote the Chinese issue, and regulate the freedom speech in the marketplace in China. We have the biggest population in the world, that's so different from any other country.

If you think about the freedom in media, maybe, you will find that we just live in the control of any hiden groups. Everyone may affects by the others. So how you can judge that you are free for you own or just relatively free under the impact of the others? That's interesting.

Smile and then, I want to tell you something relevant to chinese issue in my mind. Let's on the way to explore the Chinese news and media together by comparing some differences from the western news system.

I want to share my own opinions and discuss with you all in my blog.

Plx give me your ideas, I'm looking for the creative thinking as well~ ahaha~

Let's begin.....~
